Gum disease is an infection that attacks the gums and bones that surround and support your teeth. The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. This stage is usually painless, but the symptoms include:
- Red, swollen, and sore gums
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
The second stage of gum disease is called periodontitis. This stage causes:
- Receding gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Pus coming from the gums
- A change in your bite
- Loose permanent teeth
If you have periodontitis, Dr. Bethaney B. Brenner may recommend gum surgery. Our dentist uses the PerioLase® to perform the LANAP™ procedure, which is a laser periodontal surgery. The LANAP procedure is a way to get rid of infections and close periodontal pockets in the gums. The PerioLase laser fiber, which is only about as wide as three hairs, is inserted between the gums and your tooth, where it removes the bacteria and plaque that cause gum disease. The laser is then used to reattach your gums to your teeth, closing the periodontal pockets. This procedure is usually painless.
