Dentistry For Diabetics

Scientific data has now proven that there is a direct link between oral health (how healthy your teeth and gums are) and total body health.  This is vitally important for the diabetic, who is TWICE as likely to have gum and bone disease as non-diabetics.   In fact, a recent report from the U.S. Surgeon General outlines the direct connection between gum and bone disease and dental care for diabetics.  The worst part is, diabetes can aggravate, worsen and even accelerate gum and bone disease….which in turn, makes it more difficult to control blood sugar levels.  It's a "Catch 22" situation...lose-lose.  If your teeth and gums are in bad shape, they can make your diabetes worse, and if you diabetes is out of control, it can accelerate bone and gum disease, leaving your mouth a wreck. Dr. Brenner  pays special attention to your diabetic condition and is here to help you get back on track- so that you can have that smile you want and deserve… and a healthier, happier life! Click here to read patient testimonials

Is There A Relationship Between Gum Disease And Diabetes?
Diabetes decreases the body’s ability to fight infections. The gums are very susceptible to infection. The control of diabetes is linked to periodontal disease and how well a patient controls their blood glucose levels. Inadequate control of sugar levels can cause the development of more severe disease. These patients have a tendency to lose more teeth. Some patients with diabetes may not have all the warning signs that are associated with periodontal disease. This disease occurs more often and is much more severe in patients with diabetes. This is due to a lowered resistance and slower process of healing. Proper maintenance of blood sugar levels and hygiene care are paramount in preventing periodontal disease.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry allows for a more pleasant dental visit. Dr. Brenner is certified in sedation dentistry. The patients are not asleep but are so relaxed that they are comfortable through the entire dental procedure. This will requires that someone drive you home from the office. Our office can give you a DVD to view at home explaining sedation dentistry. Upon return of the DVD to our office you will recieve a $25 credit towards your sedation visit. Diagnodent
Diagnodent is an FDA approved device that detects decay before we can see it. It is 99% accurate and sees decay even before an x-ray shows it. If we can detect hidden decay in its earliest stage, we can stop the spread of it before it destroys the tooth. This is just one more example of the state-of-the-art dentistry that Dr. Brenner provides.

White Composite Fillings
A cavity is a hole in the tooth resulting from decay. It usually comes from plaque on the tooth that has not been removed. This plaque secrets acid which eats away the tooth creating a hole. When there is a hole in the tooth it must be filled regardless of its size or the decay will continue to destroy tooth structure. There are several types of filling material used in restoring cavities; however, Dr. Brenner only does white or composite fillings, which are the same color as a tooth. Crowns
A crown was once known as a cap. It sits on the tooth as a protective cover to prevent a tooth from chipping or breaking when chewing. A crown extends the life of the tooth. Signs for the need of a crown are: large fillings, a tooth with a crack or fracture in it already, teeth that are broken or have large chips where a filling would not hold, and teeth that have had root canals.

Gum/Periodontal Disease
Gum disease is the result of plaque, calculus, and bacteria forming deposits on and under the gums. Plaque is soft bacteria that can be brushed off with a toothbrush. Calculus is plaque that has hardened or calcified and must be removed by the hygienist. It can’t be removed by a toothbrush. Gum or periodontal disease can quietly invade into the bone and cause its loss. This is first noticed by gums bleeding when a person brushes, flosses, or uses a toothpick on his/her teeth. If not treated, the condition worsens and develops from severe gingivitis into periodontal disease. Once you have this disease you always have it, it cannot be cured only controlled. Also not widely known is the ability to pass this disease onto your spouse through kissing and sharing in the tasting of food.

Root Canal Therapy
Many patients have a preconceived notion that a root canal is extremely painful, and that pulling the tooth is twice as easy. This is false. Root canal techniques have become very advanced and are almost always painless. Basically, a root canal consists of cleaning out the canals of the root, then filling the canals with a biocompatible material. The body treats this tooth normally again, and the patient only loses 3 sensations-hot, cold, and pain. The tooth will need a crown to protect it after the root canal is done. Oral Surgery
Dr. Brenner does a variety of oral surgery procedures, from general extractions to implant placements. Wisdom teeth extraction is a common procedure amongst teens. It is better to have wisdom teeth removed when a patient is in their teens; because, the roots are not as developed, and the teeth come out easier. Wisdom teeth can be erupted (out of the gums), soft tissue impacted (just under the gums), or bony impacted (surrounded in bone). Wisdom teeth have become a source of pain, decay, crowding of teeth, and joint problems, not to mention the variety of tumors some have developed over the years. A partially erupted wisdom tooth can develop a severe painful infection called pericornitis.

Porcelain Veneers/Cosmetics
Dr. Brenner offers a smile analysis for those interested in improving their smile. Some situations can require the combinations of orthodontics, porcelain crowns or veneers, and gum surgery to accomplish that wonderful smile you deserve.

Orthodontics & Invisalign
Dr. Brenner has been doing orthodontics now for over 14 years. She believes in broad full tooth smiles, and works hard with the parents and young patients to develop the jaws so that is possible. She even starts on children as young as 8 years old to make the full orthodontic experience more pleasant for all the children. Since 2001 she has been doing invisible braces called Invisalign. Most adult patients love this method because no one knows that they are getting their teeth straightened. For more information on Invisalign Orthodontics please visit their website at www.invisalign.com Click here to read patient testimonials

Bonding
Bonding is now an old term for doing white or composite fillings.

Implants
Dr. Brenner has been restoring implants since 1990 and has recently taken additional training in implant surgery or the placing of the implants in the bone. Most patients are quite surprised that some implants can be placed at the time a tooth needs to be extracted, and others are quite surprised that implant surgery is not painful. Dr. Brenner strives to bring you the best that dentistry has to offer; therefore, she has selected the Astra Tech implants as the only implant that she places. If you are considering implants please visit www.astratechdental.com to see if implants are right for you.

TMJ/Migraine Therapy
Dr. Brenner once again through much research and study is bringing her patients the latest type of TMD splint to wear. The 20-20 TV program did a show on the new NTI-TSS splint and found that patients had more relief from their migraines than from typical prescription medications. This splint is fabricated in less than a half an hour and you can go home with it the same day. Others that suffer from TMD, clenching, fractured teeth, or grinding in their sleep also find this splint very comfortable and helpful. If you suffer from migraines you can visit www.nti-tss.com to learn ways of prevention and treatment options.

Mouth Guards
Sport mouth guards are made to protect the teeth during sport activities. In a growing child they last about 3 sport seasons or 9 months, and then the appliance does not fit, and a new one needs to be made. One very important protection that they provide is to reduce the incidence of concussion.

Complete, Customized Treatment Planning
Each patient receives Dr. Brenner’s undivided attention to their needs. Each person is unique and therefore deserves a special treatment plan to provide long term dental health. Each plan is reviewed with Dr. Brenner and all questions can be answered for you.
